USDA at hearing: Crop payments will total $6.5 billion

Payments to crop farmers for the 2014 crop year are projected to total $6.5 billion, largely to corn producers who signed up for the Agricultural Risk Coverage program, Alexis Taylor, the deputy secretary for farm and foreign agricultural services said today at a House Agriculture Committee hearing on USDA programs.

The payments will be made in October. Farm Service Agency Administrator Val Dolcini said the agency has not determined how much the payments will be cut if sequestration is in effect.

The House Agriculture Committee is holding two days of hearings with Agriculture undersecretaries and lower level officials. The second hearing is Wednesday morning.

Taylor, Undersecretary for Natural Resources and Environment Robert Bonnie, and Undersecretary for Research, Education and Economics Catherine Woteki submitted written testimony.
