Obama cites USDA in use of research to improve federal programs

In announcing actions to improve the effectiveness of federal programs by using research into how people participate in them, President Barack Obama today cited the Agriculture Department’s use of letters to farmers that included instructions on how to apply for loan options.
"Farmers who were sent a personalized letter with a customized set of action steps for applying for a microloan were 22 percent more likely to obtain a loan, representing an increase from 0.09 to 0.11 percent,” the White House said in a fact sheet.
The White House also released a report from its Office of Science and Technology Policy Social and Behavioral Sciences Team, a cross-agency group of experts in applied behavioral science that translates findings and methods from social and behavioral science into improvements in federal policies and programs.
