Senate Ag postpones child nutrition markup as debate over school meals continues

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., announced today that the markup of the child nutrition reauthorization bill planned for Thursday will have to be rescheduled.
The announcement is a signal that Republicans and Democrats have not been able to come to agreement on how to handle the future of the healthier school meal rules instituted since the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act was passed in 2010.
“I am continuing negotiations with ranking member [Debbie] Stabenow [D-Mich.] to get a bipartisan, budget-neutral agreement to move forward with child nutrition reauthorization. We’re nearly at the finish line,” Roberts said.
“My goals remain the same — craft a reauthorization package that is bipartisan, increases efficiency and effectiveness, has flexibility so all schools may achieve success in their meal programs, and addresses program integrity, high error rates, and improper payments within the programs
