Candidate reacts to the Virginia shootings

ANKENY, Iowa — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is often criticized for being too cautious and calculating, but today when she was asked at the end of a news conference for a reaction to the shooting of two TV reporters in Virginia, Clinton responded by calling for gun control — a controversial issue in rural America.
She had already left the stage at the FFA Enrichment Center here when a reporter shouted a request for her reaction.
Clinton returned to the microphone and told the reporters she was “so stricken that these two young people doing things you do every day” would be murdered.
She extended her sympathies to the families, but said she believes the incident shows “we have got to do something about gun violence.”
Too many people, she said, express sympathy and then turn away from the issue.
Clinton acknowledged that the issue is a difficult one, but said she believes “we are smart enough” to find a balance between the Second Amendment and stopping “this kind of carnage.”
