Vilsack endorses Clinton, will campaign with her in Iowa Wednesday

DES MOINES — Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will endorse Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Wednesday and will campaign with her here.

Vilsack, a former Democratic governor of Iowa, has written a column for The [Cedar Rapids] Gazette in which he says “On Feb. 1, 2016, I intend to proudly caucus for Hillary Clinton — plain and simple. Hillary Clinton is not new to the fight for middle-class families.”

Vilsack also cited Clinton’s support for the Renewable Fuel Standard as a reason for the endorsement.

“Her strong support for the Renewable Fuel Standard and bio-based manufacturing as important parts of a revitalized rural economy makes clear she will work hard to promote meaningful economic opportunity throughout the country,” he wrote.

The Agriculture Department did not announce the secretary’s trip to Iowa, but a USDA spokeswoman confirmed to The Hagstrom Report that Vilsack will campaign with Clinton Wednesday.

Clinton is scheduled to deliver a speech on agriculture at Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny at noon and another speech at Morningside College on the western edge of the state at 4 p.m.

In the evening, at 7:30, she will attend a campaign organizing event at Tabor Home Vineyards & Winery in Baldwin on the eastern side of the state.

The Clinton endorsement puts Vilsack in the possible position of favoring Clinton over Vice President Joe Biden, should he decide to run.

Biden is considering a bid, and White House press secretary Josh Earnest has made positive statements on behalf of President Barack Obama about both candidates.
