Peirce Mill, the refurbished grist mill in Washington’s Rock Creek Park, will grind corn this Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The mill, built in the 1820s and used commercially until 1897, was acquired by the federal government as part of Rock Creek in 1892. It fell into disrepair over the years, but has been restored through funds raised by the Friends of Peirce Mill and completed under the Recovery Act in 2011.
Milling demonstrations are now held on a regular schedule, April through October on the second and fourth Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Jeanne Minor, a Park Service ranger who has the title of mill operator, demonstrates the milling process. She came to work at the mill in 2010 after serving as head lion keeper at the National Zoo for 18 years.
She was recently trained at Colvin Mill Farm in Virginia under the auspices of the Society for the Preservation of Old Mills.
The Peirce Mill also has educational lectures and hosts school children each year.
