USDA: Only 15 broadband projects not complete

Fewer than 15 of the 297 projects to bring high-speed Internet service to rural areas funded by the Agriculture Department’s Rural Utilities Service under the Recovery Act will not be complete by a September 30 deadline, a USDA spokesman said today.

“As a result of continuous oversight and appropriate stewardship of taxpayer dollars, the department rescinded 42 of the initial awards and the money was returned to the Treasury,” the spokesman said.

“Today, more than 240 projects are complete or nearing completion and more than 90 percent of funds for the active projects have been drawn down. We expect fewer than 15 will not be able to complete their projects by the September 30 funding deadline.”

The Hagstrom Report incorrectly reported last week that 15 percent of the projects would not be complete by the deadline.
