RFA: DDGS exports surge, denatured ethanol exports decline

May exports of U.S. distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) — the animal feed co-product manufactured by dry mill ethanol plants — surged 23 percent over April levels and marked the second biggest monthly jump on record, but denatured ethanol exports were down, the Renewable Fuels Association reported.
May shipments were 1.17 million metric tons, RFA said, topping the 1.1 million mark for only the third time.
“Monthly exports to China were at an historic high of 864,777 metric tons in May —notably assuming the largest market share to date at 74 percent of total U.S. DDGS exports,” the report said, although it noted losses in Mexico, Turkey, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia.
Year-to-date exports are 4.5 million metric tons, which the RFA said implied an annualized 10.89 million metric tons, “more than a fourth of total U.S. production.”
Exports of denatured ethanol and denatured ethanol for fuel use declined and imports of ethanol for fuel use also declined in May, the group said.
