National Journal: White House attempts to convince Americans GMOs are safe

A White House directive to federal agencies to update the regulatory framework surrounding biotechnology is an attempt to make Americans more comfortable with genetic engineering, but it is unclear whether it will work, the National Journal reported today.
The directive to the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agriculture Department, was issued Thursday.
The memorandum was sent by John Holdren, the assistant to the president for science and technology and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; Howard Shelanski, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget; Darci Vetter, the chief agricultural negotiator at the Office of the United States Trade Representative; and Christy Goldfuss, the managing director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.
