As the Export-Import Bank on Tuesday closed its doors to new loans, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., told a home state gathering she is frustrated by the unwillingness of congressional leadership to bring up legislation to renew its charter.
“We have the votes in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives to get this done and I’m determined to find a path forward to reauthorize the Bank as soon as possible so we can give certainty to hard-working Americans,” Heitkamp told the Jamestown, N.D., Chamber of Commerce.
Heitkamp noted that Amity Technology, a firm specializing in agricultural machinery that is North Dakota’s top exporter, has gotten help from the Export-Import Bank for $8 million in sales.
She also noted that she brought Ex-Im Bank President Fred Hochberg to Fargo, N.D., to show him the Case New Holland plant that has grown because of the help of the Export-Import Bank.
Meanwhile, the White House released a fact sheet showing the use of Export-Import loans and loan guarantees in all 50 states.
The White House showed that of the $235 billion in exports supported between 2009 and 2014, $108 billion was in Washington state, which confirms the institution’s reputation as the “bank for Boeing.”
But the report also showed that businesses in each state had used the bank’s services.
