The Senate Agriculture Committee will hold a hearing next Thursday, June 25, on the World Trade Organization’s decision that the U.S. country-of-origin labeling system for beef and pork discriminates against Canada and Mexico and how to resolve the dispute, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts, R-Kan., announced today.
The hearing is entitled “Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) and Trade Retaliation: What is at stake for America's farmers, ranchers, businesses and consumers.”
The hearing will be held at 10 a.m. in Room G50 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
The House has already appealed the program, along with labeling for ground beef and pork and chicken, but pro-labeling advocates are asking Congress to wait until after the WTO process has run its course.
Canada and Mexico were scheduled to ask the WTO today for permission to retaliate, but the process would take several months to finalize.
