More farmers have chosen the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) program than expected, including 66 percent of wheat farmers, Chuck Abbott wrote in an analysis in the Food & Environment Reporting Network released Tuesday.
The other option was Price Loss Coverage (PLC), a more traditional farm program.
The National Corn Growers Association, which promoted ARC in the face of some opposition from other farm groups, said it was “proud to be a leading advocate of the Ag Risk Coverage program.”
“Our grassroots leaders understand the value of a program to better protect growers against losses where revenue crop insurance falls short and that provides assistance when most needed,” NCGA President Chip Bowling said in a news release.
NCGA noted that USDA announced on Monday that nationwide, 96 percent of soybean farms, 91 percent of corn farms, and 66 percent of wheat farms elected ARC while 99 percent of long-grain rice farms, 99 percent of peanut farms, and 94 percent of medium grain rice farms elected PLC.
The announcement came as the USDA announced that eligible producers must enroll in the ARC and PLC programs for 2014 and 2015. The enrollment period begins today and will end September 30.
