Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced today that she is running for president and that she will hold an event at Capital City Fruit, a family-owned distribution company, in Norwalk, Iowa, on Wednesday.

Clinton, former senator from New York and former first lady, is running for the Democratic nomination for president. The Iowa caucuses are scheduled for Jan. 18, 2016.

The event at Capital City Fruit could raise questions about Clinton’s position on the labeling of foods with genetically modified ingredients, because the company’s website includes a March 2015 newsletter that discusses GMO labeling.

Founded in 1949 by the Comito and Grandanette families, Capital City Fruit is today a re-packer and distributor of fruits and vegetables from several growing regions in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and abroad as well from local and organic growers throughout the Midwest, the website says.

The Capital City Fruit newsletter does not say whether the owners of the company believe in labeling, but discusses the issue.

“The practice of genetically modifying foods started with the best of intentions promoting certain traits, such as better taste or herbicide tolerance but as more foods today contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms), the concerns have grown,” the newsletter says.

“Until GMO labeling becomes compulsory, you can direct your customers toward organic foods. By definition, certified organic produce — which CCF [Capital City Fruit] offers — cannot be genetically modified.

Clinton initially announced her candidacy and her travel plans on her Twitter feed.

“I’m hitting the trail to earn your vote. Headed to Iowa,” Clinton tweeted.

A video announcing Clinton’s candidacy begins with a message that a lot of Americans are getting ready to do a lot of things, including West Des Moines Democrat Julie Stauch, shown preparing her garden and talking about how her tomatoes are “legendary here in my own neighborhood.”

Clinton herself doesn’t appear until the last 45 seconds of the video:.

“I’m getting ready to do something too: I’m running for president,” she says, adding that she will be “hitting the road to earn your vote.”

Later this afternoon Clinton’s campaign announced that she will travel to Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday for events in two small towns for “meetings with elected officials, community leaders, activists, and other Iowans from across the state to discuss her campaign and ask for their support.”

Clinton will meet with educators and students at Kirkwood Community College in Monticello on Tuesday and hold a small business roundtable at Capital City Fruit in Norwalk in Wednesday.

The Des Moines Register and The Washington Post both ran stories today on Iowa Democrats’ expectations of Clinton.

The head of Clinton’s campaign in Iowa is Matt Paul, who recently resigned his position as communications director at the Agriculture Department. Paul has been a long-time aide to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack since Vilsack was governor of Iowa.
