Video alleges poultry processing abuse; National Chicken Council panel disputes it

Mercy for Animals, a national animal rights organization, today released video footage of a North Carolina poultry slaughterhouse that it says shows workers breaking the wings and legs of chickens and sending ill and injured chickens to slaughter that should not have entered the food supply.

But the National Chicken Council said a Center for Food Integrity Animal Care Review Panel had reviewed the video and not found evidence of abuse.

“I don't see horrific animal abuse in this video,” said Chuck Hofacre, a veterinarian at the University of Georgia. “USDA inspectors are on site. If they see abuse they have authority to stop things.”
