Some school food service directors sign letter protesting SNA position

Eighty-six members of the School Nutrition Association have signed a letter to SNA leadership, protesting the organization’s position in favor of rolling back healthier meal standards in the reauthorization of child nutrition programs, The Lunch Tray, a website, reported this week.

The 86 SNA members signed the letter despite an appeal from the SNA board that members not sign statements that indicate divisions within the organization.

Although SNA, which represents school food service directors and the companies that make food for school meals programs, has claimed that the vast majority of its 55,000 members support its positions, Beyond Chron, another website, has questioned whether that is correct. (See links.)

Marion Nestle, the New York University nutrition professor who has publicized the letter in her blog Food Politics, wrote, “I continue to find it incredible that an organization of people whose job it is to feed school kids would do everything it can to make sure those kids are deprived of fresh, healthier foods, which is what the nutrition standards require.”
