Vilsack orders animal welfare update

In reaction to a New York Times story on conditions at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Nebraska, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Friday ordered the Agricultural Research Service to develop an animal welfare strategy within 60 days, Reuters reported.

Reuters based its story on an internal memo from Chavonda Jacobs-Young, head of the agency's Agricultural Research Service, sent to all Animal Research Service staff.
