ERS releases structure of farms study

The Agriculture Department’s Economic Research Service has released a study of the structure and finances of farms in the United States, noting that most are family operations, with even the largest farms predominately family-run.

“Midsize and large-scale family farms account for 8 percent of U.S. farms but 60 percent of the value of production,” the report says. “In contrast, small family farms make up 90 percent of the U.S. farm count but produce a 26-percent share of farm output.”
