Tester leads senators in COOL letter

The Senate may be out of session for another month, but Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., has led 31 of his colleagues to sign a letter urging Senate Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., and ranking member Richard Shelby, R-Ala., to reject efforts to weaken or suspend country-of-origin labeling for red meat in any fiscal 2015 appropriations legislation.
The World Trade Organization is expected to publicly issue soon its ruling on whether the revised U.S. law violates its standards. Some meat industry groups and members of Congress have urged the passage of legislation to avoid any trade retaliation from Canada or Mexico.
But R-CALF USA, a Montana-based cattle group, the National Farmers Union and the U.S. Cattlemen's Association oppose the legislation.
