Anti-GMO activists to march at United Nations

A People’s Climate March will take place in New York City in September in conjunction with the United Nations Climate Summit 2014, the Organic Consumers Association announced today.
The march will be September 21 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at Columbus Circle. The summit will take place on September 23 at U.N. headquarters.
The OCA’s “Cook Organic, Not the Planet” contingent will include Vandana Shiva, the Indian anti-GMO and climate activist.
In a recent New Yorker profile, writer Michael Specter concluded, “When Shiva writes that ‘Golden Rice will make the malnutrition crisis worse’ and that it will kill people, she reinforces the worst fears of her largely Western audience.”
“Much of what she says resonates with the many people who feel that profit-seeking corporations hold too much power over the food they eat,” Specter wrote. ”Theirs is an argument well worth making. But her statements are rarely supported by data, and her positions often seem more like those of an end-of-days mystic than like those of a scientist.”
Shiva and her supporters have disputed that view.
