Vilsack concerned about safety at Port of Vancouver

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said today he is concerned about the safety of grain inspectors at the Port of Vancouver in Washington state.

The state has pulled its grain inspectors out of the port, and Vilsack said today that was due to safety concerns during a union lockout.

USDA is under to pressure to provide grain inspection at the port, but Vilsack said today, “It is incumbent on me to make sure that any decisions are made with safety in mind.”

Washington state officials, he said, “must have made decisions in terms of safety.”

The secretary noted that there is increased traffic in other ports where inspection is taking place.
