Ways and Means subcommittee to hold WTO hearing

The House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on the World Trade Organization, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., the chairman of the subcommittee, has announced.

The witness will be Deputy Trade Representative Michael Punke, who is the U.S. ambassador to the WTO. The hearing will take place in Room 1100 of the Longworth House Office Building at 10 a.m.

“The World Trade Organization had been instrumental in liberalizing world trade,” Nunes said in a news release announcing the hearing.

“But many of its efforts have focused on 20th-century issues such as reducing and eliminating tariffs. We’d like to explore ways the WTO could more effectively address today’s behind-the-border barriers to trade and continue to address remaining tariff and non-tariff barriers, including sanitary and phytosanitary barriers to agriculture trade that are not based on sound science.”
