Organic consumers group petitioning Clinton on GMOs

The Organic Consumers Association announced Tuesday that it has launched a MoveOn.org petition drive asking Hillary Clinton to reverse her support for genetically modified organisms and to “become a supporter of the transition to sustainable, organic, regenerative agriculture.”
“As a mother, grandmother-to-be and future presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton has an opportunity to lead on the issue of sustainable agriculture and public health,” said Ronnie Cummins, OCA’s national director.
“Instead, she continues to pander to Monsanto, with whom she has deep ties and the rest of the pesticide and junk food manufacturers whose products and technologies are poisoning the environment and public health, and contributing to global warming.”
Clinton supported the use of genetic modification when she was secretary of State, and in a June 25 speech to the Biotechnology Industry Organization convention in San Diego, first noted in The Hagstrom Report, Clinton said she supports the use of genetically modified seeds because they provide traits that farmers in developing countries need, such as drought resistance.
The Organic Consumers Association said in a news release that it sees links between global warming and industrial, GMO-oriented agriculture, and that it believes there is a link between glyphosate and “chronic, debilitating diseases.”
The petition had almost 48,000 signatures as of late this afternoon, with a stated goal of 50,000.
