The Farm Journal Foundation has hired Stephanie Mercier as senior policy and advocacy adviser in its Washington office.

Mercier will run the foundation’s day-to-day operations on farm policy and also build a coalition to support the foundation’s Farmers Feeding the World program.

Mercier most recently worked as an independent consultant on U.S. and international agriculture policy projects. From 1997-2011, she served as the chief economist of the Democratic staff of the Senate Agriculture Committee, most prominently when Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, chaired it.

Before serving on the committee, Mercier was a team leader for the trade policy and programs area of the Agriculture Department’s Economic Research Service.

An Iowa native, Mercier earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Washington University in St. Louis and a doctoral degree in agricultural economics from Iowa State University.
