Labrador to challenge McCarthy for House leader

In the race to succeed House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., House Rules Committee Chairman Pete Sessions, R-Texas, has dropped out but Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, is considering a race against House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. the National Journal and Time have reported.
The election to succeed Cantor, who was defeated by a tea party candidate in a primary, is scheduled for Thursday. The House leadership stopped consideration of the fiscal year 2015 Agriculture appropriations bill until after the election because Republican members are so focused on the election.
Some tea party activists consider McCarthy, 49, too moderate, although immigration-reform activists have had trouble getting attention from him.
Labrador, 46, who is considered more conservative, would be the first Hispanic majority leader, the first Mormon majority leader and the first majority leader from Idaho if elected, Time said.
