White House Rural Council to host regional economy event Monday

The White House Rural Council will host an event entitled "Regional Food Economies: Building Market Opportunities for Rural America" on Monday.

It is billed as a conversation among Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe, Appalachian Regional Commission Federal Co-Chair Earl Gohl; Delta Regional Authority Federal Co-Chairman Chris Masingill; Dan Carmody of Detroit’s Eastern Market Corporation, and Melissa Rivers of the East Arkansas Planning and Development District.

It will be moderated by Doug McKalip of the White House Domestic Policy Council.

According to White House and USDA news advisories, the panel "will discuss how local food systems are emerging as economic drivers in rural communities and what federal resources are available to support this work."

"Secretary Vilsack will announce 'Local Food, Local Places,’ a federal initiative providing direct technical support to rural communities to help them integrate strategies for local food efforts into their community’s economic action plans. He will also discuss the latest findings from the updated USDA National Farm to School Census."

The event will be live-streamed on the White House website at 12:45 p.m.
