U.S. submits controversial agriculture report to WTO

The U.S. government has submitted to the World Trade Organization an analysis of farm subsidies and tariffs that have proven controversial this week, Washington Trade Daily reported.

One U.S. paper suggested that market price supports contribute to most trade distortions in global farm trade, while other types of support policies — such as “blue box” and “green box” measures — have minimal or no trade-distorting consequences.

But an Argentine delegate to the WTO said that rising “green box” support in the United States and the European Union signal the need for a fresh examination of the subsidies, Washington Trade Daily said.
