Massad sworn in as CFTC chairman

Timothy Massad was officially sworn in today as chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the CFTC said in a news release.

Massad “will assume his responsibilities immediately,” the agency noted.

In a brief biography, the CFTC noted that Massad has been the Treasury assistant secretary for financial stability, where he “oversaw the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), the principal U.S. governmental response to the 2008 financial crisis designed to help stabilize the economy and provide help to homeowners.”

Before joining Treasury, the biography noted, Massad “served as a legal adviser to the congressional oversight panel for TARP under the leadership of now Sen. Elizabeth Warren [D-Mass.]”

He was also a partner in the law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore in New York.

The bio also noted that Massad has a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard College and law degree from Harvard Law School.
