Commerce needs more time for sugar investigation

The Commerce Department’s International Trade Commission said Tuesday it needs more time to investigate whether subsidized sugar is entering the United States.
In a Federal Register notice, Commerce said that the investigation was supposed to be finished by June 23, but that it is “extraordinarily complicated,” and set August 25 as its new date for determining whether countervailing subsidies have been used.
Commerce noted that the parties involved are cooperating in the investigation.
“This action was expected and very much in order considering Mexico’s complicated web of sugar subsidies and the fact that Mexico’s government owns a large chunk of the industry,” said Phillip Hayes, a spokesman for the American Sugar Alliance.
“We want the Commence Department to take all the time necessary to ensure it reaches a fair and accurate conclusion.”
