White House pushes position on school meals

As the House Appropriations Committee prepares to take up the fiscal year 2015 Agriculture appropriations bill today, First Lady Michelle Obama published an op-ed article in The New York Times.
Also President Barack Obama told reporters he supports her position that the healthier meal rules should not be changed, Obama Foodorama reported.
The markup started at 9 a.m. and will probably last until about noon today when the House is scheduled to take up the Commerce Justice Science appropriations bill on the House floor.
A committee aide said that if the committee does not finish the Ag bill by the time the House floor action begins, the committee will return on Friday to finish it.
In early action, House Appropriations Committee ranking member Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., said that the majority had eliminated a provision that restricted a summer feeding program experiment to rural areas.
“By restoring the initiative for children in urban, rural, and tribal areas, we can ensure we test the most effective approaches for feeding children in low-income families in every part of this great nation during the summer months when meals are not available at school,” Lowey said.
