Farm Bureau: Big Data meeting ‘good’

American Farm Bureau Federation lobbyist Mary Kay Thatcher said late Thursday that 13 groups met in Kansas City to discuss Big Data, prescriptive farming and the privacy and security issues they present for farmers if they share their field data with companies offering the services.

Describing it as a “good meeting,” Thatcher said in an email to The Hagstrom Report that those in attendance “agreed it was positive and [that] continued valuable dialogue among the groups was a good idea.”

“We will all be taking the discussion topics back to our associations, board, companies, etc. to discuss and see where we go from here,” she said. “All agreed we will look for additional ways to continue this dialogue and provide leadership on data privacy issues.”

The 13 groups/companies in attendance:
  • American Farm Bureau Federation
  • National Farmers Union
  • National Corn Growers Association
  • American Soybean Association
  • National Association of Wheat Growers
  • National Cotton Council of America
  • USA Rice Federation
  • Dow AgroSciences
  • DuPont Pioneer
  • Monsanto
  • John Deere
  • Raven Industries, Inc., which manufacturers technical agricultural products such as field computers, planting and harvest controls
  • Beck’s Hybrid Seeds, a large family-owned seed dealer
