White House announces ‘Let’s Move’ recipe contest for Kids’ ‘State Dinner’

First Lady Michelle Obama today announced that she will sponsor a third children’s recipe contest, and that the winner and a parent from each state and territory will be invited to the White House later this summer for a Kids’ “State Dinner.”

“The Kids’ ‘State Dinner’ is one of my favorite events to host at the White House, and I am thrilled to announce the third annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge,” the first lady said.

“This event gives us the opportunity to showcase healthy creations from talented kids from across our country. I’m looking forward to seeing — and tasting — this year’s selections. So young chefs, get creative and get cooking!”

“The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge is a wonderful opportunity to help kids build healthy habits,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

“First Lady Michelle Obama, through the ‘Let’s Move!’ initiative, offers another shining example of how we can mobilize public and private sector resources to improve the lives of our children,” he said. “The decisions parents make to keep their kids healthy often start with the meals made at home. Young people who participate in this challenge and are inspired by MyPlate encourage other children to eat healthier and build food preparation skills that will influence their food decisions into adulthood.”

MyPlate is the USDA’s healthy eating initiative.

Parents or guardians may enter recipes from children ages 8 to 12 from every U.S. states and territory, including Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

The winning recipes will be chosen by a panel of judges, including Nilou Motamed, Tanya Steel, “Let’s Move” Executive Director and White House chef Sam Kass, representatives of the Agriculture and Education departments, as well as junior chefs.

Winners will be notified in May, and the 56 children will be flown to Washington with a parent or guardian for the White House event, to be scheduled for later this summer. A selection of the winning healthy recipes will be served.

A downloadable cookbook featuring the winning recipes, nutritional analysis, photos and drawings, will be available after the dinner.

Recipes can be submitted through April 5, either online or by mail.
