Agencies to hold Codex fish meeting Thursday

The U.S. government positions on the safety of fish and fish products will be the subject of a public meeting Thursday jointly sponsored by the Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Food and Drug Administration.

The meeting is being held in advance of a meeting of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products in Bergen, Norway, February 17 to 21.

Codex, jointly managed by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, seeks to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade through adoption of food standards, codes of practice and other guidelines developed by its committees, and by promoting their adoption and implementation by governments.

The public meeting will be held Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, Wiley Building, Room 1A-001, 5100 Paint Branch Parkway, College Park, Md.

Documents and agenda items related to the 33rd session of CCFFP will be accessible at the Codex website.
