Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.
The Senate is likely to take up the farm bill on Thursday, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., told reporters today after the House voted to pass the bill.
Stabenow spent the morning in the House chamber as members prepared to vote.
“If there is no objection in the Senate, it would be possible to take it up and vote on it tomorrow,” Stabenow said. “That’s certainly what we would like to see happen, but if there is an objection then we’d have to run the time on a cloture vote.”
In a statement congratulating House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., and House Agriculture ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn, Stabenow said “We are on the verge of achieving major reform.”
“It’s now up to the Senate to take the final step,” she said. “The Senate has twice passed the farm bill with overwhelming bipartisan support. I have no doubt we’ll do it again, and show that it is possible to do something to reduce the deficit and boost the economy when people work across the aisle.”
