House passes rule for farm bill conference report debate

The House of Representatives today passed a rule to allow debate on the farm bill conference report on Wednesday.
The vote was 224 to 192 on a rule that also covers a bill banning the use of taxpayer money to pay for abortions. The abortion bill will be debated later today and the farm bill on Wednesday.
Republicans voted heavily for the rule, while Democrats voted against it, which was an indication that the abortion bill, not the farm bill, dominated the members' decisions.
The House is scheduled to go into session at 9 a.m. Wednesday, which should allow for completion of the bill before the House adjourns for the Republican retreat.
The bill has not been scheduled in the Senate, but Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said today she hopes Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will schedule the vote as soon as possible. Reid has endorsed the bill.
