Cantor still expects food stamp work requirements

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Saturday he still expects the farm bill to contain work requirements for food stamp program participants, according to a report in the Springfield, Ill., State Register-Journal.
“We said if you get benefits, if you are able-bodied, you ought to be willing to work,” Cantor said. “This was one of the tenets of welfare reform in the ’90s. It proved tremendously successful.”
But Cantor also signaled that the provisions would not be as stiff as in the House-passed farm bill. Democrats have said there may be more pressure on the states to provide training programs rather than putting the onus on the food stamp beneficiaries.
“I do think the final product will reflect some of that in the end,” Cantor said. “The aim isn’t just to reduce spending. The aim is to enact good policy that can help people come off of dependency.”
