Johanns, Grassley favor two-year extension over high target prices

Sens. Mike Johanns, R-Neb. and Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, told AgriTalk on Thursday that they favor a two-year extension of the 2008 farm bill rather than accepting the House version of a new commodity title with high target prices.

But Johanns said the proposal by the corn, soy and canola growers to use a rolling average of recent years rather than current planted acres is marginally better than what the House has proposed.

“I’m not going to call out the high school band and get the cheerleaders to do flips over this one. It is a compromise,” Johanns said. “It’s very definitely better than just every year basing it on planted acres, but I’d have to say it’s marginally better.”
