Boehner announces Christmas tree ceremony

The Capitol Christmas tree will be lit on Tuesday, December 3 at 5 p.m. EST, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, announced today.

The 88-foot tall Engelmann spruce from Colville National Forest in Colville, Wash., will be the second Capitol tree from Washington state and the second-tallest tree to have the honor, according to Ted Bechtol, the superintendent of grounds at the Capitol.

The Agriculture Department’s U.S. Forest Service has provided the tree since 1970, according to a history of the Capitol Christmas tree tradition.
