Officials in King County, Washington, which includes Seattle, plan to release initial results on the initiative that would require labeling of food products made from genetically modified organisms at 8:15 p.m. PST, The Seattle Times said today, but it is unclear how strongly those results will indicate the final outcome of the all-mail election.
County election officials were planning to start counting ballots today, but Washington state voters have until 8 p.m. to get ballots postmarked or blacked in drop boxes.
As of Monday, 210,000 voters had returned ballots to King County — fewer than 18 percent of the county’s 1.2 million registered voters, the Times said.
On Monday, MapLight, a nonpartisan research organization that tracks money's influence on politics, reported that proponents of labeling had raised $7.7 million and opponents had raised $22 million.
