The House of Representatives will come back into session on January 7 and will be in session on January 15, the date that the current continuing resolution that funds the government expires, according to the 2014 House calendar released today by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.
Cantor did not mention the 2014 elections in a news release, but noted that members will usually have either Fridays or Mondays in their districts as well as at least one week per month in the district.
“Time spent back in our districts between Mondays and Fridays is essential for meeting with small businesses, the working middle class, seniors, veterans, and other local communities during regular working hours,” Cantor noted. “This is why we will continue to provide members with one full constituent work week in our districts each month.”
The calendar says Congress will be out the month of August and leave October 2 until after the elections, but will be in session some weeks during November and December.
Cantor also said the Republican leadership will schedule floor votes for the afternoon and no later than 7 p.m., although appropriation bills may require evening votes. The leadership will also continue its practice of holding last votes of the week no later than 3 p.m. the last day in session of each week.
