Due to the government shutdown, no U.S. officials will be present at the World Food Prize ceremonies and side events this week in Des Moines as the organization presents its awards to the developers of biotechnology.
Both Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Agency for International Development officials have canceled, sources have told The Hagstrom Report.
The prize has attracted both opponents and supporters of genetic modification to the event.
“Occupy the World Food Prize” marchers protested the awarding of the prize on Saturday in Des Moines and are expected to remain in the city this week.
More than 100 agriculture groups sent the World Food Prize Foundation a letter commending the organization for recognizing “pioneers” of modern biotechnology and many agribusiness officials and pro-biotech advocates are expected to be present.
