Senate CR to be shorter than House, exclude biotech rider

The continuing resolution to be introduced in the Senate today would run only until November 15 compared to the House-passed CR that runs until December 15 and exclude a biotechnology provision in the House CR, Politico reported late Tuesday.

Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., is expected to introduce the CR that would keep the government running until November 15.

This year’s appropriations bill included a provision negotiated last year that would allow agricultural chemical companies to continue to sell genetically modified seeds even if a court had moved to disrupt their use and sale. This provision has become known widely as the Monsanto Protection Act.

Mikulski said earlier in the year that she regretted the inclusion of the provision but that it was part of a much larger deal to fund the government. But on Tuesday Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee Chairman Mark Pryor, D-Ark., told Politico “That provision will be gone."
