FSIS officials will visit China to talk chicken

Two key Agriculture Department food safety officials will visit China next week to discuss the conditions under which U.S. chicken might be processed in China and Chinese chicken might be imported to the United States, Politico reported today.

USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service Administrator Al Almanza and FSIS Deputy Assistant Administrator Dan Englejohn will make the trip, Politico said.

Meat industry groups have encouraged USDA to work toward a closer relationship with China in hopes that it will encourage China to accept more U.S. exports, while consumer groups such as Food & Water Watch and Rep. Rosa De Lauro, D-Conn., have said they are concerned about the sanitation in Chinese poultry plants.
