Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack told the North American Agricultural Journalists recently that he eats lunch at his desk most days.
Asked why he had not accepted the group’s invitation to join them for lunch when giving a speech, Vilsack said that he has been eating lunch at his desk since he was governor of Iowa.
“When I became governor, there was a lot of work to do,” he said. “That is what I do now. I invariably eat at my desk.”
When he returned to the office after his speech, Vilsack said, he expected to find his lunch next to a legal pad on which he was working.
Vilsack noted that when he practiced law in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, he was able to walk home at lunch time, and usually ate with his wife and sons.
