Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan said Wednesday that her upcoming departure will give the Obama administration four years to institutionalize the ideas she has promoted through the “Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food” initiative.
In her first extensive interview since announcing her May 3 departure, published in the National Journal Daily today, Merrigan told Jerry Hagstrom that advocacy of organic and local food production should not be dependent on one person.
In comments not published in National Journal, Merrigan also noted that Time magazine in 2010 named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and that whether her initiative remains a permanent part of USDA’s approach will determine Time’s assessment was accurate.
