Peterson, Lucas comment on House GOP budget proposal

House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson, D-Minn., said today that the budget proposed by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would cut commodity programs by $32 billion over 10 years, conservation programs by $18 billion over 10 years and food stamps by $130 to $150 billion over 10 years.

Peterson made the comments in an interview on AgriTalk, a radio program

He noted that the farm bill the House Agriculture Committee passed last year cut only $35 billion over 10 years in all programs.

Peterson said the budget process in both chambers is not advancing the farm bill, and that he hopes House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., will reach an agreement on how much to cut from agriculture, including a specific amount from food stamps.

In the same AgriTalk broadcast, House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said he would view the budget document as “guidance,” and that his committee would reach some of the budget goals, but not others.

He also noted that he was pleased the budget document did not give the Agriculture committee instructions on how to achieve the cuts.
