First Lady praises Walmart, others on ‘Let’s Move’ tour

First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday finished a tour celebrating the third anniversary of her “Let’s Move” campaign agains childhood obesity, Obama Foodorama reported.

At a stop at a Walmart in Springfield, Mo., the first lady praised the retailer for pledging to offer shoppers lower prices on healthier foods and fresh produce, reformulating private-label food products to reduce sugar, sodium and fats, and building or expanding up to 300 stores by 2016 in areas designated by the Agriculture Department as “food deserts.”

Earlier Thursday at McCormick Place in Chicago, Obama announced a goal of getting 50,000 schools enrolled over the next five years, and $70 million in funding in the first-of-its kind collaboration between the private sector and foundations, including $50 million from Nike, Inc., the athletic shoe and apparel manufacturer.

The first lady also made a stop in Clinton, Miss., where she praised successful efforts to reduce childhood obesity, and she published an op-ed article in The Wall Street Journal on the business case for healthier food options.
