Crop insurance payments reach $8.7 billion

National Crop Insurance Services announced today that, as of Tuesday, crop insurance indemnities had reached $8.7 billion this year.
NCIS noted that farmers can buy crop insurance for 128 crops, but that the five crops that suffered the most damage from the 2012 drought are corn, soybeans, wheat, cotton and grain sorghum.
