WTO ag negotiators meet

Prospects for a conclusion of the Doha round of multilateral trade negotiations have not brightened, but members of the agriculture committee met today in Geneva to try to move the negotiations forward, a source close to the WTO has told The Hagstrom Report.
The negotiators discussed managing quotas for lower-tariff imports.
The G-20 group of countries coordinated within the WTO by Brazil is seeking tighter disciplines for administering tariff-rate quotas. But some proposals brought up for discussion appear to run counter to free trade principles.
The G-33 group of developing countries coordinated by Indonesia has proposed adopting provisions that would loosen domestic support disciplines in order to provide food security for poor farmers.
