U.S. to audit Canadian food safety system

The Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service will begin an audit of Canada’s food safety inspection system next week, an FSIS spokesman confirmed today.
E. coli contamination of products from an Alberta beef processing plant sickened 15 people in Canada and prompted the recall of millions of pounds of beef, but the FSIS spokesman maintained that the Canadian inspection was already planned before that problem arose.
