Presidential proclamation hails USDA 150th anniversary

President Barack Obama today proclaimed Tuesday to be the 150th birthday of the Agriculture Department while agency officials planned ceremonies in Washington.

Obama issued the proclamation Monday afternoon, praising the USDA's mission and longevity.

“I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that honor the United States Department of Agriculture for its lasting contributions to the welfare of our nation,” Obama said in the proclamation, which is posted on the White House website.

In the proclamation, Obama stated that since President Abraham Lincoln signed the legislation on May 15, 1862, to establish the agency, "The USDA has stood shoulder to shoulder with Americans for generations."
